UpStudio Africa

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, UpStudio Africa, and Nabaki Africa have partnered to launch a new Design Challenge to celebrate Innovation Week 2021. The Design Challenge – The Future Green Safari Lodge for Tanzania – calls on Young Innovators from the ages of 6 to 15 years to design innovative concepts to respond to the question: “What will the safari lodge of the future look like?”

Today, Safari Lodges make an effort to address challenges related to the environment and sustainability when they are built. While aspects of the design of Safari Lodges are taking this into account, it is important for Safari Lodges to continue to find creative ways to be eco-conscious and fully sustainable. The location and design of lodges can destroy animals’ homes or can harm animals themselves. How can these Lodges be less disruptive to the habitats of animals? Lodges use a lot of electricity and energy that is not always renewable. Safari Lodges use a lot of water and food resources which may reduce water available for animals nearby. Lodges do not often treat and manage food and human waste properly.

How can you design a Safari Lodge of the future that can help support the environment? We are looking for creative, out-of-the-box ideas!

CRITICAL THINKING
How does the concept solve one or more of the key challenges faced by Safari Lodges as listed below?

  • Supporting the natural animal habitat

  • Limited use of renewable energy

  • Lack of proper waste management

  • Limited access to sustainable water and food sources

CREATIVITY
Does the Young Designer have an innovative concept for the Green Safari Lodge? While we encourage the ideas to be completely new and creative, we will also consider if you adopt a creative concept that has been applied in other parts of the world but is new for Tanzania.

ARTISTIC LENS
How well does the artwork represent the concept that the Young Innovator had in mind?
